Village of Lyons

Mayor William Smith was sworn into office on April 21, 1961. This was the same day Sam's Food & Liquors opened their doors to the public.

Sam's Food & Liquors honors the Village of Lyons.

In the beginning

In 1961, here is a picture of the front of the store. This was taken in November 1961.

Sam tried selling fresh produce, but decided to focus more on groceries and liquor.

Sam Parisi

Sam Founder of Sam's Food & Liquors in 1961, Sam Parisi is a native of Chicago, Illinois. He was born on November 5, 1920.

Sam served in World War II as a Bombardier/Navigator. He navigated the B24's four engine planes. He completed 25 missions over Europe.

Sam attended the University of Illinois. He received his degree in Accounting. Prior to opening Sam's Food & Liquors, he worked in the city of Chicago as a Produce Manager in a small grocery store. He wanted to buy his own grocery store.

Fran Sam has been married to Francis Parisi for 62 years. Fran was born on April 17, 1920 in Nebraska.
Sam and Fran have 8 children, 15 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 1 on the way.

Did you know?

Before 1961, the Ventimeglia family owned the business. Lenny Ventimeglia operated the business as a drive-thru liquor store. One of the first drive-thru liquor stores in Illinois at that time.
